Our Dog Breeds:

We have our own breeding stock at Freedom Guide Dogs. We breed our own dogs in order to produce quality, healthy dogs that have exceptional temperaments to ensure excellent Guide Dogs. Over the years we have had the opportunity to work with several different breeds of dogs. Below are the breeds we currently use for our Guide Dog Program.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador is our tried and true breed. They are our most common breed within our program. The Labrador Retriever has a great range in size and are easy to maintain since they have a short coat. They adapt well to various situations having a gentle but willing temperament and are particularly well suited for people with special needs.

Smooth Coated Collie

This herding breed is intelligent, easy going, even tempered and fares well with other animals and people. They are easy to train and are very eager to please their owner. The Smooth Collie has a short, easy to maintain coat. The Smooth Coated Collie make very useful Guide Dogs.

Barbet

Barbets are French waterdogs. Barbets are hypoallergenic and are a wonderful fit for those with allergies. They have a wooly, curly coat and like the poodle, they do not shed. Their personality is described as companionable, joyful, goofy, obedient, and intelligent. They are quick to learn and great with children, families, and the elderly.

'Lollie's' (Lab X Collie Cross)

The ‘Lollie’ is a Labrador Retriever crossed with a Smooth Coated Collie. This mixed breed is a wonderful combination of both breeds and make good Guide Dogs. Typically they are all black in color and have some patches of white on them in various places on their body.

Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier is a herding breed who truly are gentle giants. The Bouiver’s are a hypoallergenic, non-shedding breed who we place with our clients who have allergies. They are easy to train, loyal and are known for having a pleasant nature.
