Freedom Guide Dogs (FGD) breeds, raises, trains and then places guide dogs with blind and visually impaired individuals in their “Hometown”. “Hometown Training” brings the guide dog directly to your home where the training will take place.
Who is eligible? Any legally blind man or woman of 16 years of age or older who has completed formal Orientation & Mobility training. You must be able to meet the requirements for physical capacity to handle a guide dog, this will be determined by an interview with a Freedom trainer and a physical by your personal physician. Also you must be financially able to care for the dog , i.e. feeding and annual veterinarian care (approximately $900 to $1,200 a year). If at any time either your physical health or financial health changes, you must notify Freedom Guide Dogs of said changes. FGD will provide all equipment necessary for the placement including food during training.
We use several breeds of dogs. The majority of our guide dogs are Labrador Retrievers with a compliment of Smoothed Coated Collies. These breeds are easy going and adaptable to a variety of life-styles and work situations.
Freedom’s commitment is for the life of the dog with on going follow up services to the clients. There is no cost to the client, but each year Freedom will send you an appeal letter asking for a tax deductible donation to help us continue to bring guide dogs to others who are blind or visually impaired who need our help.
Please complete the application below, once submitted the next step will be for an interview with an instructor. If you have any questions or would like to request a paper mailed application, call or write
