Hometown Training™

What is hometown training™?

Freedom Guide Dogs places all of our Guide Dogs with our blind or visually impaired clients through a distinctive program we call Hometown Training™

Our Guide Dog Mobility Instructors will travel directly to the home of the blind client. The two will be trained as a team to travel, in all facets of life, confidently and safely in the comfort of the blind individuals community.

Freedom’s training program is tailored to meet each blind person’s travel needs. The student is trained intensively with his/her new guide dog. Special attention is given to routes most traveled, such as, to work, school, church, the mall, etc. This training includes walking routes and can involve taking the bus, train or other forms of public transportation. In our experience, once a blind person has mastered the fundamentals of working with a guide dog, that person will have no trouble transferring that experience to traveling safely with confidence.

This personalized way of training can make all the difference for blind people who cannot, without hardship, sacrifice job income, forgo domestic responsibilities or travel.

In order to qualify to receive a Freedom Guide Dog you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years old
